Remote activation of Josys Browser Extension

Modified on Thu, 1 Aug at 2:00 AM

Josys facilitates deploying Browser Extensions on end-user's browsers, which act as a discovery source to provide insights on SaaS usage. By installing the extension into the end-user's browsers, Josys delivers insights into how the SaaS applications are used within the organization. This feature is useful for Shadow IT detection and monitoring software usage through browser extensions.

The deployment involves the following:

1. Preparation for Josys Browser Extension installation

2. Remote activation of the browser extension on the end user browser

Supported Browsers

  • Google Chrome
  • Microsoft Edge

1. Preparing for browser extension installation

The preparation involves communicating with your organization's security team to discuss the security and privacy policies, and acquiring the necessary approvals required to identify the following:

1. Browsers and operating systems for deploying Josys browser extension.

2. Organization key to remotely activate Josys browser extension on the end-user browsers. You can locate the organization key from Settings>>Browser Extension>> User Profile and copy the Organization key, as shown in the following image.

3. You can activate the Josys browser extension using any of the following:

  • User Email ID: You can locate the user's email id from User Profile>>Open User Profile>>Email
  • User Profile. The end user email id is captured from the Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge login profile and managed storage for Endpoint management tools like Intune or Jamf.
  • Device ID (identities): You can locate the Device ID from the User Profile>>Open User Profile>>Identifies.

Note: If user email id is not found in managed storage, then the preference is given to the Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge login profile.

2. Remote activation of the browser extension

The activation process for the Josys browser extension involves activating it on end users' browsers and ensuring the successful completion of the activation. To do so, you can choose one of the following methods:

  • Mandatory installation (recommended)The end-user cannot uninstall the browser extension.
  • Standard installation: The end user can uninstall the browser extension.

Note: Josys recommends mandatory installation of the browser extension for all end users. However, if certain end users prefer not to have the extension installed, a subgroup can be created for them, and standard installation can be carried out accordingly.

Here are the examples of remote activation of Josys browser extension using:

  1. Google Admin Console
  2. Microsoft Intune
  3. Kandji

3. Validating browser extension activation

After activating the browser extension, you can verify its successful activation using the following steps:

  1. Open your web browser and sign in using the end user's profile ID.
  2. Access <browsername>://extensions from your browser's address bar. For example, to validate the browser extension activation for Google Chrome, type chrome://extensions.
  3. Verify if the Josys extension is listed in the extension list.

Additionally, after activating the browser extension, Josys cross-references the end user's email retrieved from third-party tools such as Microsoft Intune or Google Admin Console with the user profile stored within Josys. If a match is found, the end user's activities are captured and displayed in the Discovered app for the logged-in user.
